Niña Dioz

Niña Dioz has been in this Spanish rap game for 10 years. In the past, she has worked with the legendary Control Machete and her songs have been featured on the soundtrack of "Rudo y Cursi."

She is known for her unstoppable energy both on the stage and off. M&TC invited Niña Dioz (born Carla Reyna) to perform alongside Los Master Plus and our Que Bajo DJs for our yearly Cinco de Gallo party back in May.  We got the honor of hosting her for her stay, taking her out for drinks, dinner, and dancing. It’s one of those perks of what we do!

So between touring we asked her about the future. She just moved to Los Angeles, a city that she finds both creative and captivating. We won’t ask her to choose between East Coast and West Coast rap, though. That would be unfair.  She’s out there in the world promoting her first full-length, self-released album titled “Indestructible”, because as a female MC out of Monterrey, Mexico with sights on the US you have to have thick skin and a positive attitude to get that Hollywood hustle on. Go Niña!

Tell us about the Indestructible Tour?
The idea was to present my new EP Indestructible to the media in the United States. We started in Miami where I played for the Latin Billboard kick-off party. Then continued on to Philly, NYC, and Brooklyn where all the gigs were full of good energy and a lot of people! I did interviews for CNN in Spanish, MTV3, MTV Iggy, NPR, and a couple of TV shows.

What welcomes you about New York?
New York is great, the diversity of people coming from around the world. Hip hop also started in NY so if I wear headphones and listen to Nas, The Notorious B.I.G., or Jay-Z I know that the lyrics are talking me as I go walking around town or up to one meter, just walking in the streets of Brooklyn or Manhattan with my music set up can be very inspiring!

You are a wordsmith: a poet and rapper. Have you always been a writer?
I’ve always loved writing. In my school, I used to win any contest that was from spelling to writing poetry. I was always writing songs, not only on paper but also in my mind. I improvised songs with what was happening around and made my friends laugh. Even to study a subject, I read the books as if seeking rhymes to rap.  So I learned what was in the book because I studied it like a song.

Who is new on the scene to watch from Mexico?
I really like The Simpson Cane and Ahuevo Banda.

You and your band are moving to LA. Why LA and what do you hope to accomplish there?
I love the weather in Los Angeles. California is the only place where you can skate on wood, on the water or on the ice!
The mood is more relaxed than in NY but culturally there are many things happening every day, especially the Latin and hip hop music scene is very strong there.

Everyone talks about how clear you are with your mission.
My dream has always been to travel and reach more ears. At some point, I would like to help other artists achieve their goals, whether by having my own management agency or a label. There are no limits!
