SMITHE All City Canvas Global Series NYC

This summer M&TC is pairing with All City Canvas out of Mexico City to produce a mural project titled Global City Series. It is our combined goal to elevate street art with high impact. ACC takes inspiration from the Mexican Muralist Movement and works to spread that fervor with the rest of the world. We are very proud to introduce SMITHE to New York City. Over coming weeks, he will be painting a grandiose mural in Bushwick, Brooklyn. It is our goal to promote the hell out of him and Mexican creativity the world over. His works are irreverent and modern tales of the work force. Think Mad Men meets Dali with the sensibility of Noam Chomsky. Meet SMITHE.

You wear many creative hats, illustrator, graphic designer, graffiti artist, which one do you like best?
Only, Rockawear and obviously Tony Delfino. (It's his own line of clothing.)
Your work contains themes of deconstruction, unwinding, and disembodiment. Tell us how this came about.
It wasn't intentional. From a young age I’ve had references of instruction maps and guides to build toys and motorbike assemblies that I saw in old magazines of my dad.
You are from Mexico but travel the world, tell us about a city that inspires you and why.
Traveling is very enriching and you meet great people, but definitively Mexico City is by far my biggest inspiration for my work: the chaos, the irreverence, the careless attitude from the Mexicans, esquites (corn you buy in the streets as a snack), the subway system and its cheap fee.
In the art that you make do you have an obsession?  Is it color scheme? Line formation? Scale? Message?
I work by subjects. Before, I was in a sort of therapy and I made a collection based on the human-work relationship. Right now I don't have such a profound topic, instead I'm working on my technique and using references of vintage illustrators I admire.
You will paint a wall in Bushwick tell us about the piece. What can we expect? Is it in line with other works you have made?
The piece basically speaks about the battle for the Big Apple. Migration has been one of the pillars of this big metropolitan city. I think this is the first time I work with a subject of this manner. I usually work on existentialist and surrealist topics.
What do you want to tell NYC?
That I'm going on the quest to turn more eyes over here to Mexican graphics (as I have tried in my other travels).
